Thanks for the Birds!

                                   A Supervalu Company!

2WD Promotions Goddess Chris Wilson informs me that 2WD and the other stations who make up our Entercom Hampton Roads radio family collected more than ONE HUNDRED frozen turkeys for the Food Banks of Southeastern Virginia, not to mention LOTS of non-perishable food and cash donations! Thanks to everybody who came out to the Coliseum Drive Farm Fresh Yesterday to give of their time and turkeys including Bill and Loretta from the Food Bank of the Peninsula, Nicole from Farm Fresh, and the many 2WD listeners who I got to meet like Dennis, Eva, Michelle, Sandy, Claudia, and all the generous people who work at Jefferson Labs like Chuck from Williamsburg who dropped in to drop off a bird on his way through town.

Now it’s time for Bird Drop #2 at Farm Fresh on Military Highway in Norfolk.today until 7 PM.  Don’t forget to give what you can today and throughout the holiday season. Gobble Gobble!

        The Fluffiest Loser

When this cat sits around the house...

A veterinary charity organization in the U.K. is holding a contest to see how much weight EIGHT overweight pets can lose. SEVEN of the contestants are dogs, and the other is a 13-year-old 24 pound cat named Tinks.

    REASONS TO DRINK UP

A glass a day keeps the docator a way?
Just keep in mind 'glass' does not mean the whole bottle!

You've probably heard that a glass of wine or a beer is actually GOOD for you every now and then. But do you know why? According to Yahoo.com here are four reasons it can be okay to belly up to the bar . . .

1) A LITTLE RED WINE HELPS YOUR HEART. Previous studies have shown the benefits a few glasses of red wine can have on your heart. But a new study shows that even smaller amounts will still make you and your heart age more slowly.

2) WINE CAN PROTECT YOUR LIVER
. Researchers have found that people who drink one glass of red or white wine each day are half as likely to develop non-alcoholic liver disease, which is the most-common liver problem in the United States.

3) DRINKING IN MODERATION CAN LOWER YOUR CHOLESTEROL. A new study has found that people who consume a few drinks each week have larger particles of good and bad cholesterol in their bloodstreams.
--Larger particles of GOOD cholesterol are better because they fight heart disease, and larger particles of BAD cholesterol are less likely to cause it.

4) ALCOHOL MAKES FRUIT BETTER FOR YOU. A 2007 study found that adding fruit to alcoholic drinks . . . like strawberries in champagne or sliced apples in sangria . . . can make the antioxidants in the fruit more potent.

--Berries tend to have the most antioxidants, and drinks made with FRESH fruit offer far more nutrients than drinks made from concentrate.

We've got to Move it Move it

Many of us over-eat during the holidays and during the winter in general. Blame it on “cabin fever” but come springtime it seems we all recognize the need for improved diet and some exercise. So how can it be that November has barely started and I’m already in desperate need of improved diet and exercise?  How is this possible 5 months early? Perhaps it was a case of “air conditioned cabin fever.” Whatever the reason I am going on record to officially declare my intention to “work off” my spare summer tire. But before I delve into how I plan to do this, I thought it might be useful to examine some of the reasons for my flabby demise:

Now if you are looking for a great way to GAIN some pounds QUICKLY, I have two words for you: ICE CREAM.  To ensure you maximize your girth increase potential here are a couple of simple Ken Carson recipes - eat now, thank me later!

On Veteran's Day 2008 we salute those who have dedicated their lives to the cause of freedom.  Your willingness to put yourselves in harms way in the name of our country is worthy of our praise everyday.  Whether you served in the past, or are deployed now, thank you for everything you do.

TV TAKEN BY MAN WITH NO ARMS

Police in Munich, Germany are wondering how a thief managed to steal a 27 inch TV set from a shop in broad daylight - despite having NO ARMS.    Apparently accomplises clamped the TV to the bandit's body before he walked out of the store.  Staff did not know about the crime until they saw on of their TV missing from its stand. Then they then watched the daring heist securtiy recordings.   According to a police spokesman: "It's hard to believe that the sight of an armless man walking along with a giant TV clamped to his body did not get anyone's attention."

Separated at Birth?

                    Williams or Carson?  Tough call.

Did you hear Jen and Mark make the announcement this morning?  MY favorite performer, the legendary Robin Williams is doing his first major U.S. tour in six years including a March 14 stop at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.  Besides bearing a striking resemblance, actor Robin Williams shares other attributes with 2wd afternoon host Ken Carson, for example:

I am not claiming Robin Williams and I are related in any way, nonetheless as a fellow artist I am compelled to offer my talents, acting abilities, and boyish good looks to play Robin Williams in his life story, lord forbid the need arise. The only thing I ask is that if my number is up first that Robin return the favor by portraying ME in MY life story.  Because that story may end up as more of a short film or mini-featurette Williams is really getting the better end of this deal.
Don't forget tickets to this show go on sale Monday at 10 AM - meanwhile wake up with Jen and Mark to grab your free tickets this week.  Oh, and Robin, have your lawyer call my lawyer...

HRT TO THE RESCUE

If you used to cross the Jordan Bridge for your commute it turns out you DO NOT need a rowboat to get to work now. Hampton Roads Transit launched its new 'Jordan Bridge Service' today. For a buck fifty you can get on the bus in Chesapeake at 20th Street and Seaboard every 20 minutes until 9 p.m. Passengers can deboard at Gates 10 and 15 of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The run ends in Portsmouth at County and Court streets.

I'm still not sure how they get something this big to float

Goodbye Rusty Friend!

Say farewell to the Commonwealth's oldest operating lift-bridge

Today marks the final commute for drivers who use the Jordan bridge.  After 80 years of somewhat faithful service the 80-year-old structure will be officially closed due to major structural issues.  The Jordan will be demolished probably in April.

7,000 drivers must find new ways to get across the river each weekday

Interesting facts about the Jordan Bridge:

• Located at Poindexter Street in South Norfolk west of I-464, crosses the southern branch of the Elizabeth River

• Originally known as the ‘Norfolk-Portsmouth Bridge’ it was completed at a cost of $1.25 million

• Opened on August 24, 1928 as a toll bridge

•The Jordan Bridge made possible the first continuous highway between Norfolk, South Norfolk (now Chesapeake) and Portsmouth and from Richmond to the Sea.

• The construction was planned and financing organized by South Norfolk businessman Carl M. Jordan, who operated Jordan Brothers Lumber Co. with his brother Wallace.

• The Jordan Bridge has been struck by ships many times. On June 2, 1939, an oil tanker struck it, closing it for more than 6 months. Another major collision of a ship occurred on June 13, 1943. In more recent years, there have been periodic problems with the lift mechanism in addition to occasional collisions, the most recent in January, 2004.

           Hail To The Chief

For some really cool Barack pictures click here

Unless you've been living under a rock you may have heard the news: On Tuesday Barack Obama became the new President.  In terms of electoral votes it was a 'landslide' victory, but if you look at the popular vote it was a very, very close race.  No matter which way the votes landed this was to be an historic occassion - as it turns out for the first time an African American will soon hold the most powerful office in the land.

As a broadcaster I have tried my best NOT to share my own political views on the radio.  2WD's FCC license to broadcast is contingent on our radio station serving the public interest.  Given this is a requirement for all broadcasters it's amazing how so many sydicated talk shows there are on the AM side of the dial that make no attempt to be "fair and balanced" - which is fine as long as the radio station carrying these shows attempts to also provide programing featuring equally biased opinions for the other side.  This is an example of one more Federal requirement that for whatever reason has not been enforced.  Which brings me to today's list...

      KEN CARSON'S EXPECTATIONS
     OF THE NEW ADMINISTRATION

Get the deals out of the Back Room

Some secrecy in government  is essential - especially when it comes to national security.  However the current administration and Washington in general have made secrecy the norm.  In private industry back room deals are fine - that's what that word 'private' is all about.  However the politicians are ELECTED by US.  They are PAID by US.  If the deal is not spelled out and available for everybody to view I think it stinks!  Getting rid of back room deals frightens many in Washington because it will be the end of their livelihood.  To those people I say TOO BAD SO SAD!

Make ALL recipients of Federal money accountable

We've all heard "it's better to give than receive" and I know this is true.  Surveys indicate that the vast majority of Americans have no problem with some of their tax dollars going to those who could use help.  I only ask that we put certain expectations of those recipients in place.  To those who feel it is their RIGHT to receive money - WRONG!  EVERYBODY who receives public money for any reason needs to give something in return.  Perhaps it's helping kids at a public school, or cleaning up a neighborhood, attending classes to better their situation, or maybe even providing needed assistance for others in the same financial situation.

                                  FESS UP

Whether it's in the workplace or government - nothing ticks Ken Carson off more than people who don't have the fortitude to ADMIT WHEN THEY MAKE A MISTAKE.  Whether it is Ted Stevens in Alaska, Bill Clinton wagging his finger, or that Idaho fella in the Minneapolis Men's room - the American people were not born yesterday (okay, a few were but you get my point)  Wasting our time and taxpayer dollars on lawyers and Congressional hearings TICKS ME OFF.  If you screw up, step up!
