It’s another great week here at the 2WD. I hope you are trying to win our $500 cash giveaway for the best pics of Hampton Roads! Get details right here on the website. Over the 4th of July I spent some time at my favorite place on the planet, Chincoteague Virginia. My in laws have a place at Tom’s Cove and it’s a great place to re-charge and have fun. Spent Saturday at the beach on Assateague Island and man was it cold! But the highlight for me is Mr. Whippy ice cream! I went 3 times in the same day (don’t worry, I’m jogging it off!) But the third time I went, I actually got to meet the real Mr. Whippy! Here’s the pic…I’m on the right…duh!

Have fun and I’ll talk to you soon. Hey, email me if you go to Chincoteague or have heard of it barrymckay@cox.net

Hi! First let me say thanks for listening to me on 2WD! It is always great to hear from you at barry@2wd.com  I hope you are having fun in the sun! And you know I am into health and wellness. Supplementation is the way to go for living longer, having more energy and looking good. In the best of all possible worlds, we’d always have the time to choose, find and prepare healthful balanced meals. As a result, we’d be lean and mean, full of energy, and stocked with the vitamins and minerals we need to live well longer.

Right. Let’s face it, guys: In this most real of all worlds, eating properly sometimes takes back seat to work, family, friends, or even play. And when we eat on the run, nutrition is usually the last thing on our minds. We eat what’s easy, and it generally offers the minimal daily requirement of little but fat and simple carbohydrates.
Next time you’re in rush at mealtime, instead of settling for a stomach-pounder and fries, look for a power food-one that will get you going and keep you there. Try:
Baked Potatoes
Because of french fries, too many people dismiss potatoes as healthful food. Without the grease, potatoes are nonfat and loaded with complex carbohydrates, potassium (a mineral important to blood pressure regulation), vitamin C, and copper. (Stick to margarine or, better yet, salsa for toppings, though.)
Bananas
They’re packed with fiber and potassium. Along with dried fruit, they make ideal portable snacks.
Beans
Fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates, and folate (a B vitamin) all in one package. Prefer whole beans to refried, which usually add fattening oil.
Broccoli
All the green vegetables are winners, but this one may be tops. Its list includes fiber, vitamin C, folate, and the minerals magnesium and iron.
Corn
An unsung hero, this is an excellent source of fiber and complex carbohydrates for sustained energy.
Fruit
Fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals-almost anything except fat. Dried fruits are a particularly intense source of energy. And in a pinch, an apple can sub for a toothbrush.
Fish
Usually a lower-fat source of quality protein than meat dishes. Stick with baked, broiled or poached though, since the fish plays second fiddle to fat when it’s fried.
Pasta
A great source of complex carbohydrates that also offers iron and B vitamins when it’s enriched. Stick with tomato or marinara sauce to keep fat low.
Peppers
Jalapeños and the hundreds of other types of chiles are great sources of vitamin C, and the spiciness may raise metabolism, enhancing weight loss.
Soup
Broth-based soups help you get your vegetables in a tasty mixture. Unless meat or dairy is added, it’s dependably low in fat.
Notice anything that nearly all these entries have in common? They’re basics-not complicated recipes. For nutrition, simple may simply be the best. So if you have any questions about power foods or supplementation, give me a holler here.

Hangin' with Dave Matthews!

People who favor flip-flops as their primary footwear option during warm summer months may experience lower leg pain and a change in their stride, according to research presented recently at the 55th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in Indianapolis.

“Flip-flops are very common, and this study began with the observation that most people appear to be wearing them beyond their structural limit,” said Justin F. Shroyer, lead author on the study. “It’s also apparent that individuals alter their gait while wearing flip-flops. Based on this, we expected to find that flip-flops may be a cause of pain in the leg or foot, and if so, would be counterproductive to alleviating that pain.”

The study compared flip-flops to sneakers to assess the angles at which they impact the floor and the force at contact with the ground during walking. Researchers analyzed the gait of flip-flop wearers compared to their gait while wearing sneakers.

By compiling the forces that the foot is exerting on the ground, they found a statistically significant decrease in the vertical (straight-down) force in flip-flop wearers. This decreased force may explain anecdotal evidence that persons who wear flip-flops alter their normal gait and therefore may shed light as to why some experience lower leg pain.

“Flip-flops are not designed for prolonged use or for walking long distances,” said Shroyer. “They lack the support that a walking or running shoe provides. Flip-flops should only be worn casually and for shorter periods of time. They probably should also not be a primary footwear choice.”

Shroyer also noted:

- Some flip-flops on the market may provide more support, but are usually more expensive. For someone with lower-leg or foot problems, Shroyer recommends they limit their usage, and choose a flip-flop with more support.

- Flip-flops should be replaced often. However, many people claim flip-flops are the most comfortable when they are “broken in,” just like a pair of sneakers. Flip-flops should be replaced every few months just as a runner would with running shoes.

The conclusions outlined in this news release are those of the researchers only, and should not be construed as an official statement of the American College of Sports Medicine.

…I know, I know, updates updates..whew what a fast week. Where can I begin? I spent the weekend in Baltimore with my good friends Danny Ocean and Bill O’brien. We all worked together in B-more back in the mid 90’s and hadn’t really seen each other so I had a guys weekend out. Spent time at the inner Harbor (which is awesome), had dinner at Ruth Chris ($$) and hung out at the Hard Rock. I’ve always liked Baltimore. But it can’t beat Hampton Roads….love the feeling of coming outta the tunnels and seeing all the ships and the water…then you hit an 8 inch speed bump and realize you are indeed home. As soon as Danny sends me the photos, I’ll post them. For now, my daughter had her 19th birthday recently! Congrats Alli! Love you bunches….

And here's Jilly firin' up the tray of desserts... (buy one get one free with yhour VIC card at Harris Teeter!)

Ok, so June is here and I have yet to be on the beach soaking up the sun! I’ve been near the beach. I’ve seen the beach..but I have not been on the beach. I have to put this on my calendar if I’m gonna do it. I mean last summer flew by and I think I went to the ocean less than 5 times!!! Sad I know. But I have been doing better about putting things on my calendar and then doing them. For instance I put on my calendar that I wanted to meet Pat Monahan from Train and I did!

Thanks to everyone who came out for the Patriotic Festival. It was great weather and Pat and company were awesome. We’ve got some great shows lined up this summer and you know we’ll have VIP tickets for you to win so keep us locked in on your radio.

See ya on the radio.

The bathroom project marches on (I think we began this project in the month of March!) It’s getting closer to completion as you can see. Here’s Jilly working with the laser light putting down the peel ‘n stick tile. (Ya know there’s something about a woman and a laser light ; )

Another shot of the floor getting put down. This tile was easier to cut than the last project. A different company and much easier to work with. At least that’s what Jill told me because she is the one who put it down. (see I have be honest when I blog because Jill reads this and if I take credit for putting down the peel ‘n sticks that would get me into marital trouble…not a divorce but you guys know what I’m talking about)

We started with a color. Then Jill changed her mind. So $30 later, here’s the new color on the walls. (Most of it anyway)
